Cash games are poker in its purest form: chips are real money, you can leave any time, and there are no escalating blinds forcing action. That makes them the best place to build durable skill. Here's a framework that beats low and mid stakes online.
1. Tight-aggressive is the baseline
Play a relatively tight range of strong hands, but play them aggressively — bet and raise more than you call. This "TAG" style wins because it puts opponents to tough decisions while keeping you out of marginal spots. Loose-passive players (many calls, few raises) are the ones funding the games.
2. Respect position
Open more hands in late position, fewer out of position. Most of your profit comes from pots you play in position. Revisit our position guide if this is new.
3. Bet for a reason
Every bet should have a purpose: value (getting called by worse) or a bluff (getting better hands to fold). If a bet does neither, check. Aimless "I have something" bets bleed chips.
4. Control the pot with medium hands
Top pair with a weak kicker is a one-street hand, not a stack-off. Keep pots small with marginal holdings and save big pots for big hands. This single discipline saves low-stakes players more money than any fancy move.
5. Table and seat selection
You don't have to play the toughest table available. Look for tables with a high average pot and several passive players. Sitting to the left of the weak players (so you act after them) compounds your edge.
6. Bankroll and stakes
